Welcome back to our existing parents and a very warm welcome to our new YR children and families.  The children look very smart in their school uniform.  Long may it continue.  We have a very busy term ahead so please ensure you check your child’s book bag every day as well as the school website for newsletters and key information.  You will also receive a year group Curriculum Newsletter next week which will outline the topic and main learning objectives including ways you can support your child at home.



We welcome several new staff this year:

Miss Clews - YR Snowy Owls teacher

Mr Sankey - School Direct trainee teacher who will cover Miss Smith’s Y2 Wise Owls class every                               Wednesday and supporting Y2 groups.

Ms Foster - YR Owlets Learning Support Assistant (LSA)

Miss Kirby - YR Little Owls LSA

Miss Cummins - Y2 Wise Owls LSA


School Expansion

As you can see, building work has already started.  Osborne Building Contractors will be writing monthly articles in ‘Popley Matters’ to update families in the locality about progress of the school expansion.  We are also working closely with the Local Authority School Travel Planning department, devising accessible and safe routes to school.  Please avoid driving up Romsey Close at all times but park at Abbey Road shops and walk the short pathway to school.  Please be aware that Police Community Patrol Officers will monitor parking on Romsey Close!  There should be a new pathway from Tintern Close across the junior field open on Monday. School Lunch

From 1 September 2014 all children attending infant school are entitled to universal free school meals.  However, if any parents/carers are in receipt of any of the benefits listed below your child may be eligible for pupil premium free school meals.  This means that the school will receive additional funding from the Government to enable us to employ additional resources for your child’s learning.  

If your child is in Y1 or Y2 and they were already claiming free school meals at the end of last year, you do not need to do anything further.  However, if you have a child in Y1 or Y2 and your circumstances have changed or if your child is just starting in YR and you are claiming the benefits below, you can apply online at the following address:-   www.myschoollunch.co.uk/hampshire  and follow the links to ‘Free School Meals’.  Alternatively, you can collect a form from the school office, complete and return it to the office.  The more parents whose children qualify fill in the applications, the more funding the school will receive.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Income support

  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance

  • Employment and Support Allowance (Income Related)

  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999

  • Families in receipt of Child Tax Credit will also qualify provided that (a) they are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and (b) their annual income, as assessed by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs does not exceed £16,190 (subject to annual review)*

  • Guarantee element of State Pension Credit


    *Parents who are made redundant or start working less than 16 hours per week, may find their children are entitled to free meals for a limited period.

Of course children can still have a packed lunch from home if they prefer, but if you are claiming benefits the school can still receive the extra funding if you apply, even if your child does not wish to have a school dinner.


Please ensure you label all school uniform with your child’s full name including hats, gloves, coats, shoes, PE kits and bags, lunch boxes and water bottles.  I am always amazed at the amount of lost property we donate to charity shops so please check the Lost Property box in the office porch regularly.  Children often have the same items and become anxious when they lose something.



All money coming into school must be put in your child’s zipped wallet and handed to your child’s class teacher with a note inside, indicating the amount and reason for the money being sent into school.  The office staff are unable to take loose money across the front desk.  Any change will be returned at the end of the day.

Please note we would prefer that no children attend the above meetings in order that you may fully hear the information given.


20 - 24 October – Around the World Theme Week

21 October – 4.00 – 6.30pm Parents’ Evening

24 October – Break up at 3.15pm

3 November – INSET day

4 November – Return to school at 8.45a.m.
