Welcome back! We hope you all had a lovely Easter and enjoyed the snow and sunshine!
This topic we are learning all about wild animals found in Marwell Wildlife park. We have found lots of interesting facts about them including which continent their from, what they eat and which animal group they are a part of. The children are using some lovely adjectives to describe each animal and their writing is becoming more creative.
We are very lucky to have Coach Mike to teaching football on a Thursday. The children really enjoy being active and look forward to their weekly lessons.
Art has been very messy this topic as we explore lots of different media ready to create animal print patterns. So far we have used crayons, oil pastels and a technique with paint called Sgraffito.
Spring 2 - Once Upon a time.
After 2 weeks of more remote learning, it was lovely to welcome back all the children into the classroom during this topic. We read, acted out and wrote lots of traditional tales including Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood and Jack and the Beanstalk.
The children explored making different patterns in the style of Orla Kiely and printed their designs onto fabric. They also had some music lessons with a music specialist using pitched percussion called Bamboo Tamboo.
In science we explored different materials found around the school and investigated which material would make the best roof for the dolls house.
Unfortunately we had to close our doors once more to most of the children but thanks to Google Classroom we managed to keep our learning going at home. We learnt all about the Great Fire of London and wrote a diary in the style of Samuel Pepys. The children learnt about timelines, chronology in history. In art the children produced some brilliant fire pictures both at home and in school.
Science was great fun exploring our senses and taking parts in investigations and experiments!
We finished our topic with a virtual workshop about fire safety with Hampshire Fire and Rescue.
At the beginning of September we measured the height of all the year ones and created a height display. We are looking forward to measuring them again in July 2021 to see how much they have grown!
Out and About
During this topic we are putting our Geography hats on to explore our local area! We have been on a walk around Popley to see what human and physical features are around our school. We spotted different types of accommodation, shops, parks and a church. The children have then made posters to explain to visitors what they can see and do in Popley.
Our key text this half term in Naughty Bus by Jan and Jerry Oke. The bus gets up to all sorts of mischief and we will be using the ideas from the book to write our own version set in Popley!

We’re On the Move!
Welcome to Year 1!
We are starting our year with an exciting transport themed topic where we will be learning about the history of different modes of transport. Our key person study will be all about the pilot Amelia Earhart. What facts can you find out using the links below?
We look forward to getting to know the children this half term Please keep checking back for more news about what we get up to.
Our focus text is The Hundred Decker Bus by Mike Smith. In class we have sequenced the story and written simple sentences to retell the beginning, middle and end. You can continue to share and talk about the story at home by viewing the document below.
The story inspired the children to design and make their own hot air balloons like the ones at the end of the story. Come back soon to see the final result!
