Autumn 1 - Out and About

In this first half term we will be exploring our local area and using our geography skills to look at human and physical features in Popley. We will also be looking at the history of our school comparing the school now to when it was opened in 1969.

The story of The Gruffalo which will will be retelling in our Literacy lessons.

Autumn 2 - Fire! Fire!

This term we’ll be looking at the Great Fire of London. Using our detective skills to compare life in 1666 to that of present day. As an introduction to our topic, we will write and record our very own poems. To land our topic, visitors from the local fire service will come to help us learn about what they do. This links in with our safety week where we talk about fire safety and lots of other ways to keep us safe.

Spring 1 - We're on the Move

 

This term we’ll be looking at Transport. Using our sequencing skills to retell the story of the 'Naughty Bus'. As an introduction to our topic, we will visit Brooklands Museum and see all the different types of transport and their features. 

 

Our focus this term in Math is on place value, addition and subtraction to 20. Daily practice of our number bonds to 20 will help us to solve our number sentences. We will also be looking at measure, position and directions. 

 

In history, we will be talking about Amelia Earhart and comparing transport from the past and present. 

 

Jackson Pollack is our artist of the term and we will be completing 3D Paper Mache Paintings.

Spring 2 - Marvellous Marwell

 

This term we will become explorers, looking at all different types of animals and their habitats. Using our researching skills to discover new exciting facts about animals. We will write fact files to present our findings. Meerkats, tigers and giraffes are just some of the animals you will find at Marwell Zoo...🐆🦧🐍

 

Our focus this term in Math is on place value to 50. Keeping up the good work by practising our number bonds to 20. Practically looking at multiplication and division, as well as making scrumptious pizza and using our knowledge of fractions to cut it into halves and quarters. Watches to the ready... time will be visited this term.

 

We will become geographers this half term by locating continents and oceans on a map.

Summer 1 - Once upon a time

 

This term we will become princesses and princes, entering the mystical world of traditional fairy tales. From 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff' to 'The Elves and the Shoemakers', we will explore different settings and characters. Throughout the term, we will record our roleplay of different scenarios. We may be acting as an evil prince one day to a helpful wolf the following. The more fairy tales we read, the better our acting skills will be!

 

Our focus this term in Math is on place value to 100. Keeping up the good work by practising our number bonds to 20. Grouping objects into 10's to help our counting skills. Measuring weight and length using all different types of resources. How tall is Rapunzel's tower? How heavy is Goldilock's basket? How many cubes long is your shoe?

 

Year 1 performed an outstanding Easter play, making The Merton Community very proud. In RE this half term, we are looking at special places in Popley such as places of worship, shops and parks to name a few. Asking questions such as: What makes a place special?

 

We have a magical, fun term ahead using our acting skills to recreate the world of fairy tales!
