We are delighted to have our new Year 1 Young Interpreters on board for this year, joining our Year 2 team.
We re-launched the scheme in March 2017 and asked what the children think the YIs could do to support new children in school (make friends with them, help them make friends, link them up with children who speak the same language – wear high visibility bibs/jackets on the playground will highlight who the YIs are).
As part of their training the children are also set a challenge to create 2-3 sentences in their own language to bring to our meeting so that we could all experience what it is like to be immersed in a new language.
We all agreed that we would like to have a language of the half term on display in the hall and we hold a vote to choose a country each half term.
We also discuss what the YIs thought should be in a YI kit, our ideas were: badges saying what language we speak, paper and a pencil.
We have our Young Interpreters conference to look forward to in the summer term where we get to learn about how other school's support children with English as an additional language and share the good practice from our school.
